Kenilworth Guest House in the English Lake District
A lovely place to stay in the heart of the English Lake District
Things to see and do in the area

Kenilworth Guest House is an ideal base from which to explore the Lake District, and we are happy to offer suggestions for things to do and places to visit.
Map of the English Lake District

Our little local town of Windermere offers an interesting selection of shops and galleries to browse around, banks, pharmacies, bakeries and a library (with internet access) and a post office for the practicalities of life, a Tourist Information Centre, and the flagship shop of Lakeland Limited, all within a few minutes' walk.

There is also a wide range of eating places, from cafes for a snack or light meal, to individual and unusual restaurants serving, amongst others, traditional English (fish and chips included), African and Cantonese food, and of course a few traditional English pubs!

There are many and varied walks from our front door-one of the most spectacular is Orrest Head, the local viewing point. It is approximately 30 minutes' walk and offers views of virtually the full length of Windermere (the longest of the lakes), the Langdale Pikes, the Scafells and Old Man of Coniston - the most recognised peaks of the Lake district - and even the sea!

The lake itself is also approximately 30 minutes' walk away, where bustling Bowness-on-Windermere is situated. (There are frequent local buses and many reasonably priced taxis for those who may not wish to walk, or if it happens to rain!)

Here there are interesting shops to explore, a cinema, an even wider selection of eating places to try, including Swiss-Italian, Thai and Mediterranean, as well as English of course, and more pubs!

From Bowness Bay the lake can be explored by various craft including the large Lake Steamers, Victorian steam boats motor boats and rowing boats!

For the more adventurous walkers and hikers there are numerous walks of varying length and difficulty that we can suggest, again either starting from our front door, or travelling a little further afield eg Scafell and Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, Skiddaw and the Fairfield Horseshoe. Guided walks and climbs can be arranged to suit all ages and abilities see Climb365

Getting around once you are here is easy, whether you have arrived by car or public transport. We are happy to suggest touring routes which can encorporate the splendour of Ullswater and Aira Force Waterfalls, the market town of Keswick and its lake, Derwentwater, and a liitle further afield, the spectacular Wastwater.

We can arrange mini-bus tours of the area Lakes Supertours Mountain Goat Tours (pick-up from Kenilworth), or for the more independent explorer, various passes for boats and buses mean a large proportion of the Lake District is accessible by public transport. Traveline or Stagecoach Bus

There is a wide and interesting range of museums and galleries in the area well worth a visit. For example Blackwell Arts and Crafts Centre, Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum of Lakeland Life, both in Kendal, our largest town. There is the Cumberland Pencil Factory and Museum in Keswick, and not forgetting Beatrix Potter's house at Hill Top and Wordsworth's house Dove Cottage in the pretty village of Grasmere.

There are stately homes and castles to explore, including a Roman Fort. Leven's Hall is noted for its Elizabethan Mansion and topiary (gardens laid out in 1694!!!), Holker Hall and the Lakeland Motor Museum, and our castles include Sizergh, Muncaster and Kendal, where Catherine Parr, King Henry the Eighth's last wife, was born.

For those interested in steam trains, there is the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway situated at the south end of Lake Windemere, and a little further afield is the narrow gauge Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.

Other attractions include The Aquarium of the Lake, The Jenning's Brewery and the Toy Museum in Cockermouth, The Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness, Honister Slate Mine, and various cinemas and theatres.

Other outdoor activities available in the area include, not surprisingly, sailing and canoeing, climbing see Climb365, cycling/mountain-biking (cycle-hire is available near-by), horseriding, fishing and the high-wire forest adventure in Grizedale Forest, Go Ape!,
